- Under the Software Assurance programme, customers acquire the right to install any new release of products covered in the agreement during the term of their coverage.
- The Network Inspection System provides signature-based intrusion prevention for web-based threats seeking to exploit known vulnerabilities. Updates for NIS are included in the base server licence.
- A multilayer firewall provides access control and protection on three layers: packet filtering, stateful inspection, and application layer filtering.
- Wizards allow quick configuration of remote access for both Outlook Web Access and SharePoint servers. Outlook Web Access users can be authenticated at the Forefront TMG server, preventing attacks by unauthenticated users.

Forefront Threat Management Gateway 2010 Standard Edition is a comprehensive, secure web gateway that helps protect organisations from web-based threats. It also delivers simple, unified perimeter security with integrated firewall, VPN, intrusion prevention, malware inspection, and URL filtering.
The Enterprise Edition provides increased scalability, access to a central management console, and complete support for virtual environments.
The Microsoft website lists a number of features of Forefront TMG — such as URL filtering and protection from spam and viruses — that require a subscription to Forefront TMG Web Protection Service to keep definitions current. Subscriptions are not currently donated and cannot be purchased from Microsoft through the Open Licence programme.
Forefront TMG builds on the technologies of Internet Security and Acceleration Server, which Microsoft no longer offers. Organisations with licences for ISA whose Software Assurance was current at the time of Forefront TMG's release can obtain it through their Software Assurance benefit.
Licencing: This product is licenced under the processor licencing model, with a licence required for each physical or virtual processor accessed by an operating system environment running a TMG server. This licence does not require any device or user CALs.
Acquiring the Installation Media: To activate this product, you might need a volume licence key or setup code.
